Neil Hunter Renewed as Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator
Professor Neil Hunter has been renewed as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator, extending his appointment for another seven-year term in recognition of his continued leadership in fundamental biological research.
Hunter's laboratory studies homologous recombination, the chromosome repair process that underpins sexual reproduction, heredity, and evolution. His research has revealed how chromosomes exchange genetic material and form the connections needed for accurate chromosome segregation during the production of eggs and sperm. These discoveries have deepened our understanding of fertility, miscarriage, and chromosome disorders, while also informing advances in genetics, agriculture, and cancer biology.
Over the past year, Hunter's work has received additional international recognition. He was elected a Fellow of The Royal Society, one of the world's oldest and most prestigious scientific academies, for his groundbreaking contributions to understanding chromosome biology.
